Lucas Singer

Vita
For many years, bass Lucas Singer has been a permanent member of the Cologne Opera ensemble, where he has built up a broad repertoire over recent seasons. Here he has appeared as Sarastro in “Die Zauberflöte,” the Hermit in “Der Freischütz,” Publio in “La clemenza di Tito,” Zuniga in “Carmen,” Biterolf in “Tannhäuser,” Masetto in “Don Giovanni,” Timur in "Turandot", Pistola in "Falstaff", and Death/Loudspeaker in Viktor Ullmann's "Der Kaiser von Atlantis". He has also performed roles in "Die Soldaten" by Bernd Alois Zimmermann, "Peter Grimes" by Benjamin Britten, Orff's "Die Kluge", and Beethoven's "Fidelio".
Lucas Singer began his career at the International Opera Studio of the Cologne Opera, joining the permanent ensemble of the Cologne Opera in season 2014.15. In recent years, he has made successful debuts at the State Theater Karlsruhe, the National Theater Mannheim, the Kiel Opera, the Landestheater Coburg, the Theater Basel, and the Komische Oper Berlin. In addition to his stage engagements, Lucas Singer pursues an active concert career, as documented by recordings such as J. S. Bach's Mass in B minor on the Spektral label and sacred works by Otto Nicolai on the Carus label. His repertoire ranges from Renaissance vocal works to the great Romantic oratorios. Concert tours and guest performances have taken the bass singer to the USA and Central America. But art song is also very close to the bass singer's heart, and he can often be heard performing various programs dedicated specifically to this genre. At the Cologne Opera, he has performed the roles of Sarastro in Mozart's “Die Zauberflöte,” Wagner in Gounod's “Faust,” the double role of Adler/Voice of Zeus in Braunfels' “Die Vögel,” Fafner (“Das Rheingold für Jung und Alt”), Zuniga (“Carmen”), the farmer in “Die Kluge,” Osmin in “Die Entführung aus dem Serail,” the roles of editor-in-chief Berlioz/Archibald Archibaldowitsch in York Höller's “Der Meister und Margarita,” and Panthée in “Les Troyens.” His most recent roles in Cologne include Daland in “Der fliegende Holländer,” Don Alfonso in “Così fan tutte,” Swallow in “Peter Grimes,” Angelotti in “Tosca,” Tom in “Un ballo in maschera,” Seneca in “L'incoronazione di Poppea,” Benoit/Alcindoro in “La Bohème,” Orest's nurse in “Elektra,” High Priest of Baal in “Nabucco,” Zuniga in “Carmen,” the bass roles in the world premiere of “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit”, Ernst in the children's opera “Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten,” and Sarastro in “Die Zauberflöte für Jung und Alt.”
He made guest appearances at the Leipzig Opera as Swallow in Peter Grimes, at the Dortmund Concert Hall as the Bailiff in Werther, and at the 2024 Bayreuth Festival as Daland in the children's opera "Der fliegende Holländer". He appeared as the Colonel in Zimmermann's "Die Soldaten" in a production by Calixto Bieito at the Cologne Philharmonic, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and the Philharmonie de Paris. He made a guest appearance as Timur in "Turandot" at the Saarländisches Staatstheater.
In season 2025.26, Lucas Singer will once again sing Sarastro in "Die Zauberflöte", Fafner in "Das Rheingold", Bartolo in "Le nozze di Figaro", Timur in "Turandot", and Maeldictus Made in the children's opera "Der Wunschpunsch" by Elisabeth Naske. He will also sing with the chamber orchestra of the Gürzenich Orchestra in a program of Baroque composers.
