The lyric tenor Dmitry Ivanchey comes from a fifth-generation family of musicians and combines a distinguished violinistic background with vocal stylistic assurance. His core repertoire centres on Mozart and bel canto, complemented by a range extending from Rossini to Manoury.

He studied violin at the Gnessin Academy and voice at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. At the same time, he spent four years as a violinist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, an experience that profoundly shaped the precision, phrasing, and intonation of his singing.

A key stage in his career was the Zurich Opera House, where he was a member of the ensemble, appearing as Almaviva, the Steersman, Pang, and the Young Count, among others. There he performed a great deal of contemporary repertoire (Zimmermann, Eötvös, Lange) – a field in which his violinistic training is clearly reflected in his artistry.

At the Aalto-Theater Essen, he further refined his Mozart and bel canto profile with roles including Belmonte, Tito, Don Ottavio, Ferrando, Tamino, Nemorino, Almaviva, Adam, and Belfiore.

Since the 22/23 season, he has been a permanent ensemble member at Cologne Opera, where his roles have included the title role in "Idomeneo", Belmonte, Tamino, Don Ramiro, Ferrando, Nemorino, Iopas, Camille de Rosillon, and Don Ottavio. He also took part in the world premiere of Philippe Manoury’s Thinkspiel "The Last Days of Mankind" (2025).

Guest engagements have taken him, among others, to the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm and Graz Opera as Don Ottavio; to La Monnaie in Brussels and the Opéra de Lyon as the Italian Singer ("Capriccio"); to Toulouse as Pedrillo; to the Bolshoi Theatre as Bomelius; and as the Steersman to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Festival de Pâques in Aix-en-Provence, Zurich Opera House, and in concert performances at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.

His repertoire also includes Prokofiev’s Pierre Bezukhov in "War and Peace" – performed, among other venues, at the Theatre Royal Glasgow and the Edinburgh Festival Theatre – and Shostakovich’s "The Nose" (title role at Teatro Real Madrid), both significant landmarks of the twentieth-century repertoire.

His festival appearances include the Baden-Baden Easter Festival, Festival Radio France Montpellier, Klangvokal Music Festival Dortmund, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Prague Spring Festival, and the Saaremaa Opera Festival in Estonia.

He has worked with conductors such as Fabio Luisi, Nello Santi, Marco Armiliato, Alain Altinoglu, Marc Albrecht, François-Xavier Roth, Enrique Mazzola, Teodor Currentzis, and Kirill Petrenko, as well as with directors including Robert Wilson, Barrie Kosky, Andreas Homoki, Calixto Bieito, Tatjana Gürbaca, Stephen Lawless, Dietrich Hilsdorf, and Grischa Asagaroff.

Awards include First Prize at the Moscow Competition for Lyric Tenors, Second Prize at the Minsk International Christmas Singing Competition, and at the International Città di Pesaro Competition, Second Prize (violin) and Third Prize (voice).

During the 25/26 season, he appeared in the title role of "Idomeneo" at Graz Opera and the Tyrolean State Theatre Innsbruck, as the tenor soloist in Haydn’s "The Creation" at the Prague Spring Festival, and in Cologne as Don Ramiro in "La Cenerentola", Tamino in "The Magic Flute", and Argirio in "Tancredi".

In the 26/27 season, he will appear as the Singer in Richard Strauss’s "Der Rosenkavalier", the opening production marking Cologne Opera’s return to Offenbachplatz. He will also portray Adam in Alessandro Scarlatti’s "Cain and Abel" in Dietrich W. Hilsdorf’s acclaimed production, which premiered at the Aalto-Theater Essen in 2020, as well as Wenzel in "The Bartered Bride" in Laurent Pelly’s production, created in collaboration with Teatro Real, Opéra national de Lyon, and Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie. In addition, he will sing Tamino in Michael Hampe’s fairy-tale production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "The Magic Flute" and Ferrando in Tatjana Gürbaca’s production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "Così fan tutte". At the Kinderoper Köln, he will perform the roles of the Fisherman and the First Japanese Envoy in Beka Savić’s 2015 production of Igor Stravinsky’s "The Nightingale", presented in the newly built and unique children’s opera house at Offenbachplatz.
