Scene from My Fair Lady by Frederick Loewe: Three performers in period-style costumes are set in a street scene in front of a building façade with a columned entrance (Covent Garden flower market). An older man in the background, wearing a coat, scarf, and cap, tosses flowers into the air. In the foreground, a young woman, Eliza Doolittle, kneels in a long dress holding a bouquet of white roses, looking up with delight. Beside her, a young man in a dark coat and flat cap also kneels, holding flowers and looking toward her. Falling petals fill the scene, creating a lively, festive atmosphere reminiscent of the bustling activity of a flower market.

Description

Set in London around 1910, the phonetics professor Higgins is convinced that language determines social status. The subject of his wager is the flower girl Eliza Doolittle, whom he intends to transform into a lady of high society. Higgins becomes a kind of Frankenstein of speech: with Eliza, he creates a being whose language and emotions he manipulates. At first driven by his own ambition, the experiment gradually turns as Eliza changes – her self-confidence grows, and she begins to resist Higgins’s control. What starts as an experiment evolves into a story of self-discovery and independence.

The musical’s success lies in the duality of a complex relationship and the masks of society, as well as in songs such as The Rain in Spain. While George Bernard Shaw’s original play PYGMALION particularly socially critical, MY FAIR LADY brings a sense of lightness and humor to the story, with a wink. The melodies and subtle wit add a new dimension that remains both critical and charming. The result is a musical that masterfully balances depth and lightness, captivating audiences with elegance.
