Christopher Purves, geboren in Cambridge, sang im Chor des King's College in Cambridge, wo er zugleich Englisch studierte. Sein Opernrepertoire umfasst Partien wie Lescaut in „Manon Lescaut“, Beckmesser in „Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“, Golaud in „Pelléas et Mélisande“, Sharpless in „Madama Butterfly“, Melisso in „Alcina“, Balstrode in „Peter Grimes“ sowie die Titelpartien in „Wozzeck“, „Falstaff“, „Le nozze di Figaro“, „Gianni Schicchi“ und „Saul“. Er gastierte u. a. an den Opernhäusern von Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Mailand, Paris, Chicago und Melbourne sowie bei den Festspielen von Salzburg, Glyndebourne und Aix-en-Provence.
Konzertengagements mit Werken etwa von Purcell, Bach, Händel, Mozart, Beethoven und Strawinsky führten ihn zudem u. a. nach Brüssel, Rom, Madrid, Porto sowie zu den BBC Proms in London.
In der Titelrolle in Händels „Saul“ gibt Christopher Purves 2025-26 sein Köln-Debüt.
