How do you promote an opera that hasn't even reached the stage yet? That's the unique challenge of theatre marketing: capturing a feeling, an atmosphere and a sense of anticipation long before the curtain rises.

For the 26/27 season, photographer Teresa Rothwangl and creative director Bernd A. Hartwig spent a week in the studio with a group of performers, developing the new campaign imagery in an intensive, almost laboratory-like creative process.

We joined them for a day to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look. Among the visuals created were those for Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier – the first premiere following Opera Cologne's return to the Opera House at Offenbachplatz – and Bedřich Smetana's The Bartered Bride.

From the very first "raw" moments without styling or make-up to the final image, every shot evolved through changing light, experimentation and unexpected moments of inspiration. In the end, a single photograph has to convey what audiences can expect when they step into the opera.
