Born in China, mezzo-soprano Jing Yang studied singing at the Beijing Conservatory of Music from 1994 to 1999, graduating with a bachelor’s degree. She received a scholarship from the “Künstlerstiftung der Schweiz” to continue her training. From the winter semester of 2003, she continued her studies with Prof. KS Jeanne Piland and Prof. Matthias Goerne.

In November 2000, she was awarded second prize at the first International Singing Competition in China. In February 2005, she won the International Singing Competition of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg. In December of the same year, she received first prize at the Schmolz and Bickenbach Competition as well as the DAAD Prize.

She attended masterclasses in Italy, Japan and Germany, working with artists including Ileana Cotrubaș, Matthias Goerne, Joan Dornemann and Mignon Dunn. In December 2006, she performed to great acclaim in “FAUST SCENES” under Christoph Eschenbach at the Salle Pleyel in Paris.

From 2006 to 2014, she taught as Professor of Musical Theatre Singing at the Beijing Musical Academy in China. In the 2014/15 season, she was engaged at the Hanover State Opera. Since the 2015/16 season, Jing Yang has been a permanent member of the Cologne Opera Chorus.
