Stephan Steinmetz studied Theatre Studies with a focus on Music Theatre at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. This was followed by internships at the Stuttgart State Opera, the Munich Biennale for New Music Theatre and the Salzburg Festival.

From 1995 to 2002, he worked as a dramaturg for opera, ballet and concerts at Theater Ulm, and from 2002 to 2007 in the same capacity at Stadttheater Bern. In the 2007/08 season, he joined Oper Leipzig, followed by an engagement at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken from 2009 to 2011. His other activities included working in the press office of the Bayreuth Festival in 2009. From 2011 to 2014, he was a dramaturg for opera, ballet and concerts at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, and from 2014 to 2020 a dramaturg for opera and ballet at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, where he was responsible for numerous special projects and event series. From 2020 to 2022, he worked as an opera dramaturg at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe.

As a production dramaturg, Stephan Steinmetz has worked with directors including Michael Schulz, Gerd Heinz, Harry Kupfer, Elisabeth Stöppler, Tatjana Gürbaca, Nigel Lowery, Immo Karaman, Floris Visser, Ludger Engels, Christopher Alden, Richard Siegal, Kay Link, Ben Baur, Manuel Schmitt and Anja Kühnhold.
