What can you do if you are madly in love but your lover simply does not return your feelings? As Tristan and Isolde already knew, a love potion helps! And so Nemorino, who is unhappily in love with Adina, also senses his chance when the street vendor Dulcamara offers him this kind of love potion. But it is – let us reveal at this point – only a bottle of Bordeaux wine, meaning that the now tipsy Nemorino screws up everything and Adina once again turns away indignantly. Instead, she decides to marry the smart Belcore as soon as possible. With the help of a second love potion and a good portion of coincidence, everything takes a happy turn.

Gaetano Donizetti's hilarious and romantic comedy with its multifaceted melodies became one of the greatest successes of his career already at its premiere in Milan in 1832. To this day, "L'elisir d'amore" is one of the most popular bel-canto operas, not least because of the dreamlike tenor aria "Una furtiva lagrima", in which Nemorino's hope for the happiness of love is reawakened by a "furtive tear" in Adina's eyes.

After its immense success in Madrid, Valencia and Brussels, Damiano Michieletto's fast-paced production of "L'elisir d'amore" as a humorous beach party with a fresh breeze of wit and a dash of eroticism can now be experienced for the first time in Germany at Oper Köln. Conductor Matteo Beltrami returns to the podium of the Gürzenich Orchester after conducting "Cenerentola" brilliantly in the 2022.23 season.
