Der Opernchor der Bühnen der Stadt Köln besteht seit fast 200 Jahren als Berufschor. Als Leiter des Chores waren, meist in wechselnder Reihenfolge, der erste und zweite Kapellmeister für je ein Jahr zuständig. Erst vor ca. 100 Jahren wurde das Amt des Chordirektors eingeführt, der für die Einstudierungen des Chores verantwortlich ist. Die große Zeit des Chores begann mit dem Chordirektor Peter Hammers, der das Ensemble von 1936 bis 1948 leitete. Ihm folgte Heinz Kellers. 1959 übernahm Hans Wolfgang Schmitz die Leitung und machte den Opernchor durch Rundfunk- und Fernsehaufnahmen, Schallplatteneinspielungen und Gastauftritte über die Grenzen Kölns hinaus bekannt. Hans Wolfgang Schmitz und seinem Nachfolger Albert Limbach stand über 30 Jahre (bis 2006) Horst Meinardus als stellvertretender Chordirektor zur Seite, der in diesem Amt eigene Einstudierungen übernahm.
Von 1992 bis 2005 war Albert Limbach Chordirektor des Opernchores. Unter den zahlreichen Aufführungen seiner Zeit sind besonders Luigi Nonos »Intolleranza« und Peter Ruzickas »Celan« hervorzuheben. 2005 übergab er sein Amt an Andrew Ollivant. Das breitgefächerte Repertoire und die regelmäßigen Aufführungen zeitgenössischer Werke zeigen die hohe musikalische und klangliche Flexibilität, die der Opernchor unter seiner Leitung entwickeln konnte.
Seit der Spielzeit 2018.19 ist Rustam Samedov Chordirektor des Opernchores.
