Damiano Michieletto studied opera and theatre directing at the Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi in Milan and modern literature at the Università Ca’ Foscari in his hometown of Venice.

His production of Weinberger’s Schwanda, der Dudelsackpfeifer at the 2003 Wexford Festival won an Irish Times/ESB Theatre Award. This was followed by engagements at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Salzburg Festival, and Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He has directed at the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden), Oper Frankfurt, Opéra national de Paris, Opéra national de Lyon, Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and the Glyndebourne Festival.

Alongside his work in opera, he also works in theatre, particularly for Teatro Stabile del Veneto and the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. His more recent productions include Verdi’s Rigoletto at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, the Italian premiere of Bernstein’s Mass in Rome, and the world premiere of Raskatov’s Animal Farm at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam.

At the Bavarian State Opera, he made his debut in the 2022/23 season with Aida and directed a new production of La Fille du régiment in 2024/25. He also staged The Messiah in collaboration with the Komische Oper at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport.

At Oper Köln, he has previously directed L’elisir d’amore and will return in the 2026/27 season with his acclaimed 2018 production of Macbeth, originally created at Teatro La Fenice.
