Young Woo Kim

Vita

It is thanks to his passion for music that the Korean tenor has already performed on many occasions worldwide. A scholarship enabled him to study singing at Chugye University for the Arts. He has been awarded several prizes including the "Irene Sandford Competition Award" of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. From 2016 to 2018 he was a member of the International Opera Studio of Oper Köln and during this time he performed as Toniolo in Gassmann's "Gli uccellatori" ("The Birdcatchers"), Der Jüngling in Schreker's "Die Gezeichneten" and Gastone in "La Traviata" among other roles. He also sang the part of the Second Young Officer in Bernd Alois Zimmermann's "Die Soldaten".

With the start of the 2018.19 season he joined the permanent ensemble of Oper Köln. Among the roles he has since performed at Oper Köln are Fenton in Verdi's "Falstaff", Hoffmann in “Hoffmanns Erzählungen für Kinder", Daniel Buchanan in Kurt Weill's "Street Scene", Mambre in Rossini's "Mosè in Egitto", Sou-Chong in "The Land of Smiles" (concert performance), Shepherd in "Tristan und Isolde" and Don José in "Carmen". In the 2020.21 season he appeared in the title role of Gounod's "Faust" and as 1st Armed Man in “Die Zauberflöte”. In December 2021 he was awarded the Offenbach Prize by the Verein Freunde der Kölner Oper e.V. for his special artistic achievements. In the 2021.22 season, his performances included Siegmund in "Die Walküre für Jung und Alt", Hoffegut in "Die Vögel" and – again – as 1st Armed Man in “Die Zauberflöte" and Don José in Bizet's "Carmen". In April 2022, he also performed Siegmund in "Die Walküre für Jung und Alt" as part of Oper Köln's South Korean guest performance.
