Modestas Pitrenas is one of the most successful Lithuanian conductors of the younger generation. He has established an international reputation both through his extensive symphonic concert activity and as an opera conductor. He made his debut at Oper Köln with Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, and has appeared as a guest conductor at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the National Opera in Warsaw, the Aalto-Theater in Essen, the Stuttgart Opera, the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, and at Theater Basel with Sergei Prokofiev’s The Gambler, among others.

Awarded the Lithuanian Art and Culture Prize in 2012, the former chief conductor of the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra in Lithuania and former General Music Director of the Latvian National Opera in Riga is currently Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra in Vilnius.

Since the 2018/19 season, Modestas Pitrenas has been Chief Conductor at Konzert und Theater St. Gallen. Even before his appointment, he had already made a name for himself there through a series of symphonic concerts and opera productions. Since the 2023/24 season, he has also served as Artistic Director of the concert division.

In the 2026/27 season, he returns to Oper Köln to conduct Dvořák’s Rusalka.
