about “LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN”

Due to the current technical constraints, “LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN” (premiere on 28 November 2026) cannot be presented in the originally planned production by Stefan Herheim.

Instead, the internationally renowned director André Heller-Lopes will create a new staging developed especially for Oper Köln. André Heller-Lopes is Brazil’s leading opera director and one of Latin America’s most active artists in this field. Andrés Orozco-Estrada, General Music Director of the City of Cologne, will conduct.

We are delighted that this solution allows us to present an artistically distinctive and exciting perspective on Jacques Offenbach’s masterpiece while ensuring the best possible conditions for a reliable performance schedule.

All performance dates remain unchanged: 28 November 2026 / 2, 4, 10, 17, 19, 22, 26 and 31 December 2026 / 3 January 2027 / 14 and 27 February 2027.

Les Contes d'Hoffmann

With his final opera, left unfinished, Jacques Offenbach created a unique work poised between grand opera, the enchantment of operetta and a Romantic tale of terror.

Close-up of a middle-aged man against a black background with a cinematic look and warm lighting: With short, tousled brown hair, he lies on a water-covered floor, looking toward the viewer. He wears a white shirt, and his face and upper body are reflected in the dark surface of the water. His expression appears exhausted and introspective; the scene conveys an atmosphere of reflection and inner turmoil. The scene evokes the figure of Hoffmann from Jacques Offenbach’s opera The Tales of Hoffmann.
