Rubén Dubrovsky is an internationally active conductor, artistic director, and festival intendant based in Vienna. With his broad repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary works, he collaborates internationally with renowned orchestras, opera houses, and independent ensembles. His career is characterized by stylistic diversity, dramaturgical clarity, and a strong connection between analytical thinking and musical expression.

Since the 2023/24 season, Rubén Dubrovsky has been Chief Conductor of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. In addition, since 2025 he has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Cologne Opera. As early as 1999, he founded the Bach Consort Wien, which under his direction has become one of Austria’s leading Baroque ensembles. Concert appearances have taken the ensemble, among others, to the Vienna Musikverein, Theater an der Wien, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, the Palau de la Música Valencia, and festivals such as Styriarte, Carinthian Summer, the Handel Festival Halle, Festival Estoril Lisbon, the Schwetzingen Festival, and the MiTo Festival.

As a conductor, Rubén Dubrovsky has led productions including Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo, Agrippina, Radamisto, Tamerlano, Orlando, Semiramide, Oreste, Alcina, Serse, Semele, Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, and The Triumph of Time and Truth; Mozart’s Mitridate, Idomeneo, La clemenza di Tito, Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Die Zauberflöte, and Don Giovanni; as well as operas by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Lully, Scarlatti, Gluck, Rossini, Nicolai, Martín y Soler, Bizet (Carmen), and Stravinsky (The Rake’s Progress). Engagements have taken him to houses such as the Semperoper Dresden, Palau de les Arts Valencia, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Leipzig Opera, Bonn Opera, the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich, and Cologne Opera.

In the concert field, his repertoire spans from the 18th to the 21st century. He has conducted works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Cherubini, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, Wagner, Zemlinsky, R. Strauss, Bloch, Ravel, Dukas, Bartók, Gershwin, Weinberg, Shostakovich, Pärt, and Strasnoy.

A central characteristic of Dubrovsky’s musical identity is what he considers the fundamental importance of rhythm. He understands rhythm as shaping musical forms of expression and as a primordial component of music, which in turn also influences his conducting style in the classical symphonic repertoire, in what the specialist press describes as a “sparkling, vibrant mixture of precision and dance-like drive.” Dubrovsky’s approach to historically informed performance practice demonstrates a flexible methodology that emphasizes different interpretative possibilities and rejects a strictly normative notion of “authentic” performance.

Alongside his work as a conductor, Dubrovsky is also active as a music researcher. A focus of his work lies in the interactions between European Baroque music and Latin American musical traditions, particularly in the context of historical exchange processes between Europe, Africa, and South America. Projects such as Bach to the Roots (ORF), Vidala (Gramola), Sarabanda, Musica Chamanica, and Viola Latina have been presented internationally and received numerous awards. The CD Vidala was nominated in two categories for the German Record Critics’ Award.

Another focus of his work as an orchestral conductor is music education and audience engagement. Dubrovsky relies on introductions and concert formats that highlight the relationship between the work, its historical context, and contemporary perception.

From 2016 to 2023, he was Artistic Director of Third Coast Baroque in Chicago. He is Intendant of the Mittersill Festival, which connects classical music with traditional musical cultures from Salzburg and other regions of the world.

His discography includes Handel’s Messiah, Pace e Guerra (Sony/Harmonia Mundi), Monteverdi’s Selva morale e spirituale (ORF/DVD), as well as television productions such as Winterklang (ORF/3sat). His recordings have been released by Gramola, Sony/Harmonia Mundi, and Naxos.
