Sören Leupold begann 1988 seine Ausbildung als klassischer Gitarrist an der Musikhochschule in Köln. Im Anschluss an sein Examen 1993 studierte er bei Prof. Konrad Junghänel Laute und schloss mit Auszeichnung ab. Sören Leupold spielt mit bekannten Orchestern wie Musica Antiqua Köln, Academy of Ancient Music, Cantus Cölln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, La Fenice, Kölner Akademie, Kölner Kammerorchester, Al Ayre Espanol, Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam, Nova Stravaganza, Freiburger Barockorchester, Concertgebouw Orkest, Janine Jansen, Lucie Horsch, Andreas Scholl, Musikfabrik NRW. Seit 1995 ist er festes Mitglied beim Combattimento Consort Amsterdam. Sören Leupold hat bei zahlreichen CD-Produktionen mitgewirkt, von denen viele mit Preisen wie Diapason d‘or, Editor‘s Choice Grammophone, Recommandé Classica, Grammy Nominée ausgezeichnet wurden. Weltweit hat er an Radio- und TV-Produktionen mitgewirkt.
Heute gehört er zahlreichen internationalen Ensembles für Alte Musik an, spielt aber auch zeitgenössische Werke. 2003 gründete er außerdem das Leupold Trio in der Besetzung Violine, Violoncello und Laute.
