Eike Ecker
Vita
Eike Ecker, director, freelance director, senior director at Cologne Opera and lecturer at Cologne University of Music and Dance, received singing, dance and acting lessons while still at school. She studied German language and literature, art history and musicology at the University of Bonn.
She helped establish the Cologne Opera's children's opera programme while also working on the production of short films for the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Since 2001, she has been assistant director for opera and drama at the Cologne Theatre. In 2008, she took over company management for the Voralberger Landestheater and was stage manager and director for the Bregenz Festival's lake stage productions (including „Il Trovatore“, „Tosca“ und „Aida“) for many years.
From 2007 to 2009, she was the artistic director of the Cologne Children's Opera, staging productions such as Britten’s „Little Sweep“, Pauer’s „Rotkäppchen“, Rabaud’s „Der Schuster von Kairo“, Tarkmann’s „Räuber Hotzenplotz“, Montsalvatges’ „Der gestiefelte Kater“ and „Die kleine Zauberflöte“ on the opera stage, which was subsequently performed at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon.
In 2008, she was awarded the „Land der Ideen“ prize by Federal President Horst Köhler for her work at the Kinderoper. As a stage director, she has worked at the Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), National Grand Theatre Shanghai and Teatro Real Madrid, among others, and as a director in Zurich, St. Gallen, Baden, at the Theater an der Wien and during the Bregenz Festival in Lech am Arlberg with „André Chénier“ (performance on snow), at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven and the Theater Osnabrück. She also staged regular productions for the Theater Trier, including the opera Brokeback Mountain.
At the Cologne Opera, Eike Eckers' productions of Kreislers' „Lola Blau“ and „Adam Schaf hat Angst“ were just as successful as her production of Rossinis' „La Cenerentola“, Zellers' operetta „Der Vogelhändler“, the revue „Comedian Harmonists“ and the operetta „Im weißen Rössel am Wolfgangsee“. Her production of Ullmann's „Der Kaiser von Atlantis“ at the Cologne Opera was an extraordinary success. The pandemic format „Solo Turandot“, created in collaboration with Martin Koch, was named Best Online Format in the Deutsche Bühne critics' poll.
