Alcántara

Argentine baritone Germán Enrique Alcántara is rapidly establishing himself as a leading interpreter of Verdi. Recent seasons have seen a series of major Verdi role debuts, including Miller in “Luisa Miller” at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, Valencia; the title role of “Rigoletto” at Welsh National Opera; Renato in “Un ballo e Maschera” at Teatro Colón; and Marquis de Posa in “Don Carlos” (French version) and Giorgio Germont in “La traviata” at Theater Kiel. In March 2025, Alcántara made his recording and role debut as the title role of “Simon Boccanegra” in Opera Rara’s world premiere studio recording of Verdi’s original 1857 version. The album was named, among other accolades, one of The New York Times’s Best Classical Albums of the Year, and at the 2025 Presto Music Awards, Alcántara received the award for ‘Recording Debut of the Year’.

During the 2026/27 season, Alcántara will appear at Oper Köln in the title role of “Rigoletto”; at Teatro Real, Madrid as Paolo Albiani in “Simon Boccanegra”; and at Garsington Opera as Ford in “Falstaff”. Beyond Verdi, Alcántara will make his Italian main-stage debut at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma as Enrico in Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor”; and perform the role of Ismaele in Opera Rara’s modern-day premiere revival of Mercadante’s “Il campo de’ crociati”, conducted by Carlo Rizzi with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chorus of English National Opera at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall.

In spring 2027, Alcántara releases his debut recital album, Cantares: songs from Argentina, on IBS Classical with his long-time collaborator, pianist Knut Jacques. A deep exploration of Alcántara’s musical heritage, the album includes, among other works, the first-ever recordings of Julio Perceval’s song cycle Cantares de Cuyo and Anna Carrique’s song cycle Coplas puntanas. On 16 October 2026, Alcántara makes his Oxford International Song Festival debut in an Opera Rara recital featuring a selection of songs from the album alongside rare songs by Donizetti.

A former member of London’s Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO) Jette Parker Young Artist Programme (2018-2020), Germán Enrique Alcántara studied under Rosa Dominguez at the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris (2014-2016) and Ryland Davies at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia (2016-2018). Recent highlights include Alcántara’s Spanish main-stage debut as Kyoto in Mascagni’s “Iris” at Teatro Real, Madrid (2025/26 season); Sir Riccardo Forth in Bellini’s “I Puritani” at Teatro Colón (2025/26 season); the title role of Wainwright’s “Hadrian” at the Festival di Spoleto (2024/25 season); Cantador in Piazzolla’s “Maria de Buenos Aires” at Oper Köln (2024/25 season); his US debut as Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” at San Diego Opera (2023/24 season).
